Floral wreath defines the backbone of composition. It symbolizes fertility of meadows, the Universe and a sign of Infinity and motion at the same time. Round form is ideal. Nature cycle is a continuous and dynamic motion. The wreath is also an indispensable symbol of St. John’s Eve, it is connected with nature and its rhythms and recurrence. 

There is a symbolic meaning to very detailed and meticulously chiseled motives of meadow flowers, which form the basis and background of a wreath. These are prototypes of fertility and continuity. Part of them is transparent and creates multilayered composition, rich in small details.

In the centre of composition in contrast with the pliable background set by flowers and plants, Puzurs’ graphic outlines are inserted as well as Latvian Solstice calendar, signs of strength and cross. Cross as the symbol of Absolute, the point of crossing of the horizontal and vertical, the aim and meaning of human life.

It is in this collection that I for the first time came clearly and convincingly to the idea of reducing the horizon line to one point, with subsequent ‘disclosure’ of the point into multidimensional construction of Puzurs. This is my understanding of dimensional and infinite nature of Cosmos. 

But this subject is unthinkable without understanding of the roots, pagan features of Latvian culture, bonds of Latvian people with rhythms of nature and a special attitude to Summer Solstice Festivals. 

Cross turning into dimensional Puzurs, contrast of pliable floristic forms with strictly organized geometric frame suggested a solution. It was Puzurs itself exactly that helped to array and structure my understanding of the subject. Due to this work I discovered for myself that perhaps an ancient man was much closer to understanding the nature of the Universe, than a modern man.

Four seasons, 12 months. Day and night. The Sun and moon waxing. The day replaces night, the black lace of a wonderful nature chain changes into a white one. Dew drops scattered everywhere turn into pearls – symbol of self-expression and achievements.Оne flower looks like Baltic sea wave and tiny pearls inserted into it are splashing water and starry night at the same time.

Some of the paintings of this cycle are also filled with unobtrusive bent, branchy motif, which exquisite straws interweave into Puzurs. Not only in Latvian tradition this symbol is considered orderly, harmonic symbol of the Universe, which in terms of energy is favourable for environment and human being. With its form and golden colour it reflects the idea of light revival. Puzurs transforms negative emotions, streamlines thoughts, creates protective field and symbolizes connection with God. Kinetic objects of that kind came to us from Northern Europe, where they are commonly known as “himmeli”. In Swedish and German language the word means sky.

The backbone of this composition is a wreath, which is made up according rainbow spectrum principle, opening the deep essence of each of the seven primary colours, all their nuances and diversity. The core of the wreath is white. This is the white colour which permeates meadow. White as a forerunner of all, the foundations of the Universe.

Nine ambers - nine symbols of ‘Solar energies’ are woven into the wreath. The sun rays flash each stone in which Latvian meadow plants stand motionless, having found eternal peace in golden tears of pine trees. The amber in this painting absorbed all hues characteristic for Latvia. Some are yellow like grain fields, field flowers or butter. Others are of bee and honey colours. The amber can be of crimson sunset above the sea and brown like home brewed beer.

Process of painting can be compared to making Indian mandala. Its aim is to show joy of life, compliance with the laws of and rhythms of nature, respect for cycles of the Universe. The profound meaning of the painting is to discover the entire Universe and deep sense in each spear and blade of grass.
